Let the Saviour Breathe

Why we must stop looking outside for what already lives within

There is a reason we linger in our problems longer than we should. It is not because deliverance is far off. It is because we keep looking in the wrong direction.

We look up. We look outward. We scan the sky for a saviour to descend, we search the horizon for rescue to arrive from somewhere else, from someone else, from anywhere but here. And so we wait. We wait for a sign, a stranger, a sudden intervention from outside our own walls, our own bodies, our own communities.

But the Saviour is not out there. The Saviour is within and among us.

This is not a metaphor to soften the wait. It is a reality we have refused to recognize. Among us, right now, are those carrying the very deliverance we cry out for. They walk beside us. They sit across from us at the table. They are shaped by the same struggles we are shaped by, yet something in them has been set apart to carry us through. And what do we do when we encounter them?

We choke them. We silence them.

We call them a threat. We call them abnormal. Because they do not look the way we expected a saviour to look. Because they arrived too ordinary, too familiar, too close to home to be believed. So the very society and environment that needed them ends up breaking them, until the ones we should have been supporting are themselves left searching for someone to save them.

When the saviour needs a saviour, we are in serious trouble.

Think about what this means. The one appointed to lead us out has been so wounded by our neglect, our suspicion, our silence, that they now stand where we stand: looking, waiting, longing for deliverance. This is not a small failure. This is a community consuming its own hope.

And still, some emerge. Not because it was made easy for them, but because they fought for it. Scripture says the violent take the kingdom by force. Emergence, breakthrough, becoming who you were called to be, none of it comes gently in a hostile field. It is taken, contended for, wrestled out of resistance.

But here is the deeper truth beneath all of it:

Nobody is coming from outside to save us.

The only thing that reliably comes from outside is judgment. That is all that is truly at the world's disposal to hand us, verdicts, criticism, condemnation. Everything else we actually need for our deliverance has already been placed within. It does not arrive by descent. It arrives the way all real life arrives: through birth, through the slow work of maturity, and finally through manifestation.

This is why we must stop choking the ones among us who carry what we need. Stop silencing the voice that sounds too familiar to be prophetic. Stop treating the near and the known as too ordinary to be sent by God.

Recognize them. Support them. Let them do the divine work they were positioned to do.

Let the Saviour breathe.
